1. Never wrap your electronics in plastic. Plastic causes moisture to be trapped inside, unable to dry. To prevent dust build-up, use sheets, towels, or packing blankets to wrap electronics.
2. Remove all detachable cords and wires. If there are multiple cords and attachments it might be wise to use labels on each cord to identify its use. Store all cords together in a clearly labeled box.
3. Pack a dehumidifying agent such as silica gel packets to store with your electronics. These will help absorb any moisture before it damages the internal electronic components.
4. Remove all batteries, which can leak acid and cause corrosion on the inside of the item.
5. Avoid stacking items on top of any delicate electronics.
6. Use boards or pallets on the floor of the storage unit to avoid scratches or water damage.
7. If storing a computer, back up the data on CD or an external hard drive.
8. Carefully label all boxes containing electronics as ‘Fragile’.
9. Use bubble wrap or foam padding to protect glass screens, monitors, or scanners.
